The Shift from NMAS to AMDRAS: What It Means for Mediator Training and Accreditation

Which option is best for you?

We are transitioning between the National Mediator Accreditation System (NMAS) and the Australian Mediator and Dispute Resolution Accreditation Standards (AMDRAS). This transition began on July 1, 2024, and will continue until June 30, 2025. During this time, accreditation requirements for mediators and dispute resolution professionals are evolving to align with the new national standards.

We are pleased to announce that we have received approval from the AMDRAS Board to deliver our new AMDRAS-accredited course. With this approval, we can officially offer training that meets the updated accreditation standards. Enrolments are already open for our first AMDRAS course, which begins on March 3, 2025.

This post provides a detailed comparison of the available course options, helping prospective mediators make informed decisions during this transition period.

Take the First Step Toward Becoming a Mediator

Are you ready to start your career in mediation? The AMDRAS Certificate of Training gives you the skills and knowledge to become a nationally accredited mediator.

This course provides a structured and practical learning experience, helping you develop the ability to manage conflicts and facilitate resolutions confidently. Unlike previous training models, AMDRAS offers a flexible and modern approach, including pre-mediation and video mediation training, ensuring you are well-prepared for real-world mediation scenarios.

Once you complete the course, you will be eligible for the national accreditation assessment, opening the door to new career opportunities in mediation and dispute resolution. If you’re ready to build valuable skills and gain professional recognition, this is your chance to get started. You can still choose NMAS until 30th June 2025.

What AMDRAS Means for Accredited NMAS Mediators

If you already hold NMAS accreditation, you automatically transition to AMDRAS without additional training or assessments. Your accreditation stays valid, so you continue practising without interruption.

AMDRAS introduces Advanced and Leading Mediator Status, which provides formal recognition for experienced mediators. If you are looking to develop your professional standing further, you will have the opportunity to apply for these higher accreditation levels.

Mediation Institute will offer a separate session for NMAS-accredited mediators who want to learn more about these new recognition pathways.
